BREAKING: LAPD budget cuts put sex crimes unit on the chopping block
The city of Los Angeles has instituted budget cuts on its police department in response to calls to defund the police.
Following the death of George Floyd during police custody in Minneapolis, Democrat-controlled cities across the United States moved to institute police reforms, notably in the form of budget cuts—and Los Angeles is no exception.
On Thursday evening, FOXLA journalist Bill Melugin reported that multiple sources within the Los Angeles Police Department produced a memo sent out to department personnel by Asst. Chief Dominic Choi notifying them of cuts to the department due to the city’s “fiscal emergency.”
“A City of Los Angeles fiscal emergency has created an unexpected Department budgetary crisis and shortfall,” notes the memo. “As a result, the Chief of Police is making significant and difficult changes to adapt to the current financial and personnel shortages. To sustain essential patrol operations, the Department will utilize the Managed Attrition process to move personnel resources into patrol and patrol-related duties.”
Specialized units to be disbanded include the Sexual Assault Special Section in the Robbery Homicide Division and the Burglary Special Section and Cargo Theft Detail in the Commercial Crimes Division.
Also on the chopping block is the Safer Cities Initiative in the Mission Area, the entire Homeless Outreach and Proactive Engagement (HOPE) unit, and the Animal Cruelty Task Force in the Detective Support and Vice Division.
“In addition, all vacancies outside of the Office of Operations will be eliminated in order to downsize the organization to meet the staffing goals,” it continues. “The number of personnel affected from each entity and the rules related to seniority and rank have not been finalized. Employee Relations Group is working with the Los Angeles Protective League to establish the criteria for identifying personnel who are to return to a geographic area and will publish the protocols when appropriate.”
